Gossip
sound installation
Megadue, Bologna, 05/2026
In Gossip, Pierpaolo Ovarini builds a sound device grounded in an
unresolved tension between revelation and concealment. The work manifests
itself as an unstable presence, crossed by a voice that tries to emerge but is
constantly brought back to a threshold of inaccessibility.
It is not simply an electroacoustic installation, but rather a perceptual
structure in which sound becomes a matter of conflict: what is offered to
listening simultaneously coincides with what is withheld. At the center of the
work a private content surfaces, pronounced with extreme clarity by a horn
loudspeaker. However, in the very moment it takes shape, the word is
submerged by a masking signal generated by the remaining loudspeakers,
which prevents its full intelligibility. The noise does not accompany or
amplify the speech, but acts as an opaque surface, a barrier that protects the
confessional core of the work and keeps it suspended between presence and
denial.
This dynamic recalls, on a conceptual level, Emilio Isgrò’s erasures, where
what is erased or hidden does not lose communicative force but, on the
contrary, gains magnetism precisely because it is unreachable.
The withheld part generates curiosity, as happens with gossip. Interest
arises from the desire to discover what remains secret or not fully accessible;
here too, the voice keeps existing within the sonic saturation. The listener is
thus involved in an unstable and frustrated listening experience, forced to
confront the limits of perception. The exhibition space turns into a space of
waiting and tension, in which the desire to understand clashes with the
impossibility of fully accessing the content. In Gossip, the secret is not what
remains unsaid, but the very fact that it is said without ever being fully
understood.
